Response to Roger Kline’s 2014 report

In 2014, Roger Kline released his report: The “snowy white peaks” of the NHS: A survey of discrimination in governance and leadership and the potential impact on patient care in London and England.


We gladly support the work of the NHS Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES) team on BME representation in the NHS and accept his findings that currently, the NHS workforce is not representative of the patient population. We fully support the evidence that diversity in leadership leads to improved health and greater experiences of the NHS and welcome the challenge of making significant changes and supporting staff members from BME backgrounds to move into higher roles. This means that as a service, we would be better able to support a diverse patient population in the future.


The NHS Leadership Academy aims to be a beacon of best practice in all areas of leadership development and we are therefore committed to ensuring we develop a workforce that is fair, diverse and fully representative of those we both serve and employ.
