NHS Improvement has produced a new guide to help senior leaders increase professional diversity at board level.
The NHS Long Term Plan highlights the importance of visible senior clinical leadership in enabling and assuring the delivery of high-quality care, both within organisations and the wider system. ‘Clinical leadership – a framework for action’ highlights the approaches organisations can take to encourage clinicians from all disciplines to pursue senior leadership positions.
Responding to the NHS Long Term Plan, the framework was produced in partnership with the Leadership Academy, which has been working with clinicians to explore some of the barriers and enablers they identify when moving into senior leadership positions.
Endorsed by a number of professional bodies, the guide includes key questions and ideas to consider across five areas:
- Building confidence
- Widening perspectives
- Talent management
- Organisational culture
- Practical levers
The framework is accompanied by a range of case studies in which clinicians from a range of disciplines share their own experience of the journey to senior leadership roles.
